A Rice Bank has been established for the Karuna Children's Centre resulting from the funds raised from the residents and friends of Gymea on 24th January 2010.
A Rice Bank consists of 10,000 kg of husked rice which is de- husked when required and stored in sacks under a waterproof shelter. The weather has destroyed many crops in the northern district of Varin due to a long and sustained series of typhoons which cut across the area last July and August. This will result in rapidly increasing prices of staple nutrients such as rice.
A Rice Bank allows the operator to buy what rice has not been damaged during the harvest time (December) from farmers at reasonably low prices and hedge against rising prices. It also allows the operator of the rice bank to lend quantities of rice to villagers and be repaid with interest the following year.
Each 3 days the Centre goes through over 50 kg of rice which seems to be increasing at a rapid rate as the kids develop. The carers Sok and Kore spice up the rice dishes with salted fish from the markets, lake leek , morning glory (a type of spinach) and pork .
After de-husking the Rice Bank will provide the children at the centre with enough rice for their diet for the next 12 months without incurring the

English lessons for all!
During the hottest months of February, March and early April 2010, Cathy ventured up to Varin to establish a program of English lessons for the different age groups at the centre and spent time in the local schools as well teaching English to over 200 children.
