Children learn Khmer dancing skills

Wednesday, 21 April 2010

In July 2008 the Karuna Center commenced special classes designed to teach the children how to dance traditional Khmer dancing. Two teachers from Siem Reap have been visiting the Center each weekend and have organised music to be played. The children are delighted not only to be learning these special skills but it is teaching them the cultural importance of their heritage.
They have combined these lessons with field trips to the new National Museum and the Culture Centre in Siem Reap and now have a great appreciation for the richness of their culture.
The children have so much fun learning these traditional dance routines and can now dance several traditional dances including "The Blessing Dance" performed during festivals or National holidays where the dancers sprinkle flower petals at their audience to bestow good fortune and best wishes to them. "The Harvest Dance" shows the flirtatious acts of the male dancers taunting the female dancers as they pick the harvest. The "Coconut Shells Dance" also exhibits the rituals and ethics of young people . When the young men misbehave the women use coconut shells to keep them away." The Apsara Dance" depicts the celestial dancers of Cambodia found sculptured into all the Angkorian temples , the graceful and respectful movements of these dancers is the essence of Cambodian culture
